Clinton Giustra Ocular Health
Candente Copper is a proud corporate sponsor of the Clinton Foundation, and is an active participant in the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative (CGSGI). With the mission to "alleviate poverty, improve health care, advance education, and improve the environment in developing nations", CGSGI is helping Candente Copper leverage our social work in the community.
The primary objective of this initiative in the region surrounding Cañariaco is to provide free corrective eye surgeries to those suffering from cataracts and who may otherwise not have access to this type of eye care. This is particularly relevant as cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in adults in this area. Through pre-surgery questionnaires, The Clinton Foundation has determined that individuals visually impaired by cataracts were significantly poorer, less likely to be involved in productive activities, and had a reduced quality of life than post-surgery patients.
Through the Cataract Surgeries Project, CGSGI in partnership with Fundación Carlos Slim A.C. and the Ministerio de Salud de Perú (Peruvian Ministry of Health), Candente Copper is helping to create economic opportunities and significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of Peruvians. Since the inception of the Clinton Foundation's cataract project in July 2009, the surgical network has completed more than 20,000 cataract surgeries and held regional cataract campaigns resulting in surgeries in all 24 regions of Peru. CGSGI's goal is to provide a total of 50,000 cataract surgeries to poverty-stricken and remote populations in Peru by the end of 2013.
Candente Copper's Corporate Social Responsibility team have implemented cataract diagnostic campaigns in the following regions of Cañaris District as of April 2012: Cañariaco, Kañaris, Huacapampa, Pandachi, Chilasque, Magampampa, Ullurpampa and Pucara. Surgery campaigns are to be executed once the diagnostic campaigns are complete.
